The Global Health Body Issues Warning Over Acute Scarcity of Obesity Jabs

Less than 10% of people that would benefit from GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy can access them, caution the World Health Organization as it releases its initial recommendations on the drugs.

Given more than one billion individuals worldwide now obese, it is urging increased and just access to this class of drugs.

Per forecasts, more than two billion will be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our latest guidance affirms that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be managed with comprehensive and ongoing support," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are key barriers to universal availability to the jabs that can aid individuals in losing significant body mass, notes the agency.

Weight-Loss Drug Supply Crisis

Even under the present best projected outlook, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies could only cover approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, per the health organization.

The recommendation urges governments and firms to increase availability, by strategies including voluntary licensing.

The intellectual property rights on semaglutide – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in multiple countries in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Injections Function

GLP-1 drugs imitate a biological compound to reduce digestion speed, reduce hunger and enhance satiety so users consume fewer calories.

Patients commonly see weight reduction after several weeks of beginning the weekly injections.

Research suggests patients may regain a significant portion within a year of halting the drug, as their normal food cravings resume.

To be overweight or obese raises your chance for developing diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some cancers.

Excess weight concerns individuals in countries worldwide and was linked to over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
